Candy fundraisers appeal to everyone. There are so many different types of candy that there is certainly one for everyone. Most candy has a low cost and there is plenty of room for profit depending on the candy you choose. Candy Fundraisers are some of the most popular types of school fund raising items you can use.

The Best Selling Candy Bars - Great Fundraiser Ideas

Would you believe Americans eat approximately 22 pounds of candy each a year! About half of that is chocolate. I got to wondering what the most popular candy bar is. So I started doing some searching online to try to find out.

SnickersAccording to USA Today Snickers has annual global sales of US $2 billion. The Snickers company website and the National Confectioners Association agree that it is the is the best selling candy bar of all time.

Snickers is made by Mars, Incorporated which reported US $18 billion in annual sales in 2005 (This includes non-candy product lines also.) Besides Snickers, Mars makes Milky Way, Mars Bar, M&M’s, Twix, and Skittles.

On the other hand, The Hershey Company claims to be the largest North American manufacturer of chocolate and sugar confectionery products, with annual revenues of nearly $5 billion. Besides Hershey Chocolate Bars, they also make Reese’s, Hershey Kisses and Kit-Kat among others.

So it looks like Snickers, M&Ms and Hershey are some of the most popular brands, at least in the US. If we also consider world-wide popular chocolate brands then we have to mention Cadbury’s. In the US we mainly just hear about Cadbury’s at Easter, but it’s a year long popular chocolate in many other countries including Canada and the UK.

Now we are not really even talking about the best chocolate or best tasting, that is a whole other discussion. My aim was just to find out the chocolate bars that sell the most.

It seems that this title belongs to the Snickers bar. However, I have still not found the sales in dollars or number of units for any of the other brands. It would be interesting to see who is number 2, 3, etc. I am guessing it’s Reese’s, M&M’s or Hershey’s but that is just a guess.

Many people enjoy collecting and displaying their collection of treasures. A collectible
can be anything from high end antiques to something rather simple like Pez dispensers. Sometimes people even focus on a specific brand like Coca-Cola merchandise.

Curious GeorgeI know from personal experience that many of these collections begin rather by accident. Years ago a former supervisor at work gave me a Curious George tin as a birthday gift. I displayed it in my office and soon my collection began to grow. Several ’secret santas’ and office mates contributed and finally friends and family too as by then everyone knew about my collection.

Here are two ways that your group can take advantage of the popularity of collectibles when you’re fundraising:

First, if your school or other group would like to do a catalog sale fundraiser, choose one that features collectibles. The Home & Gift Collection by Reader’s Digest is a 47 page gift and general merchandise catalog used for fundraising. It has quite a few items that are popular as collectibles including:

  • Thomas Kinkade - wall plaque, coasters, placemats
  • Angels and other ornaments
  • High School Musical - popular with pre-teens and teens
  • Kitchen gadgets and cookbooks

By offering a gift catalog that includes collectible items, you’re increasing the chances that people will find something they would like to add to their collection or to give as a gift.

Another way to offer collectibles as a fundraiser is to create something unique, only available from your group. There are a variety of companies that specialize in creating one of a kind collectibles and corporate / promotional gifts. A unique item that would be a great collectible is the custom suncatcher / ornament available from Wullbrandt Studio.

You can use these as a direct sales fundraiser and sell them for $20 each, or give them away as thank you gifts for people who make direct donations. If at all possible I would recommend using them as thank you gifts for donations. This way you can set the giving level higher, perhaps $50-$100 depending on your audience. When you call it a “thank you gift” it becomes a much more special item. You’re not selling them, you are giving them so it’s a totally different mindset.

Chocolate Cheesecake - Yum!

Nestle Chocolate CheesecakeI just love cheesecake! But it’s even better when its chocolate. There are a variety of chocolate cheesecake and other cheesecake flavors available from the Wow Fundraising cheesecake brochure.

Plus these cheesecakes include ingredients from recognizable brand names like Nestle and Oreo. So when your school or other group shows these catalogs to your supporters they will instantly recognize these brands.

Cheesecake is definitely one of the most popular desserts. And when you have cheesecakes including great flavors and great brands that is even better.

Football LollipopsWhat will they think of next… now you can fundraise using not just any old round lollipops, but ones that are shaped like footballs. If your football team, booster club, or cheerleading squad needs an extra football game fundraiser you can sell these pops.

You can either sell them in the bleachers or in the concession stand. If your group has a booth somewhere in the stadium at the game you could add them to your lineup of other merchandise. They’d also be an easy sell at pep rallies if your school will allow candy sales at school.

These football shaped lollipops come in 16 flavors - Banana Split, Black Cherry, Blue Raspberry, Blueberry Cheesecake, Cherry Cheesecake, Cherry Snow, Cotton Candy, Grape Delight, Green Apple, Juicy Orange, Lemonade, Lime Slush, Strawberry Shake, Watermelon Slice, Wild Berry, and Wild Cherry.

There are actually quite a few other lollipop shapes available. (If you think footballs are weird check out the alien pops!) You can view all the available pops here … or Call 1-866-249-2714 for more info.

Cookie Dough Fundraiser Prize Program

Premium Cookie DoughWhen your school signs up for a fundraising program from a particular company you should always ask if they have a prize program. Some companies don’t offer prizes and others do. Sometimes it’s an advantage and sometimes it’s not but maybe I can post about that later. For now I just want to make sure you are aware of the free cookie dough prize program.

Everyone likes free stuff right, especially free food! When participants of this cookie dough fundraiser sell 12 items from the catalog they will get a free box or tub of cookie dough. They call this the Baker’s Dozen Prize Program (how clever).

So which catalogs does this apply to? Actually this fall there are four different catalogs that qualify for this program:

These catalogs include pre portioned cookie dough, frozen cookie dough tubs and cheesecakes — all in a variety of flavors. You can even do more than one catalog so that you can offer supporters more choice.

When your school takes advantage of this cookie dough fundraiser prize program you’re giving families more incentive to purchase, sell and promote the school fundraiser. Free cookie dough and more funds raised, how could you beat that deal?

World's Finest Chocolate SaleSchool groups, sports teams and many other groups can use the chocolate bars from World’s Finest Chocolate as a chocolate sale fundraiser. These chocolate bars have been a staple for many school PTA groups, marching bands and other school groups.

I was suprised to find so many different kinds of chocolate bars available. The ones that I’d seen as a kid in high school were the $1 bars. They still have those, but there’s also King Size bars and $5 boxed chocolates too. The flavors include chocolate with almonds, caramels, chocolate crisp and quite a few others.

One drawback to these or any chocolate sale fundraiser, is that since these are low priced items then you have to sell a much higher quantity in order to raise a lot of money. Groups that have quite a few sellers will benefit most from a chocolate sale. In our high school the marching band sold World’s Finest Chocolate. That was a great fit because with over 200 members if each student just sold one or two cases they could reach their goal. Plus there’s always a few students who are “over achievers.” ;)

Another way to work around the high quantity issue is to sell the $2 and $5 items. Since these have a higher price tag you don’t have to sell quite as many of them to make the profit.

Personalized Candy Bar WrappersDid you know that your school can promote school spirit with its own personalized candy bar wrappers? World’s Finest Chocolate offers the option of customizing its chocolate bar wrappers. Many school groups sell these chocolate bars to raise funds — why not raise school spirit too? You can put your school name and logo or mascot on the label. This also helps your supporters know that when they buy the bar proceeds go to your school.

Discount Card Fundraiser - How Much $$ Can Be Raised?

Discount Card FundraiserIn my last blog post I talked about the basics of a discount card fundraiser, what it is and how they work. Today we’re going to discuss the fundraising potential of this kind of program.

Now one of the most important things when choosing ANY fundraiser for your school, sports team or youth group is deciding on a goal, i.e. how much MONEY you need to raise. Once you have that goal take a long hard look at the fundraisers you are considering. Ask yourself and your committee if these programs are realistically going to be able to allow you to reach that goal. The number of participating volunteer fundraisers and just how motivated they are is important. But with some programs you may just not be able to get the volume of sales or manpower for the event for it to work.

With that said, let’s take a look at the discount card fundraiser. With this program your group makes $7.00-$9.00 profit per card depending on the number of cards ordered. The price per card depends on the number of cards that you order, as with most things they give you a better price the more you buy.

So how many cards can you really sell? Being very conservative, each member or family in your group can at the bare minimum buy one card for their own family. So let’s suppose you have 50 families. That’s 50 cards sold for a fundraising result of $350. That’s just with every person or family buying one card for themselves!

Many people in your group can sell at least 5 or 10 cards each. As with everything there will be a few people who sell only one or two, and a few that can sell 15 or more. Let’s take that example group of 50 again and say an average of 5 cards per person. When you order 250 cards the price drops to just $2 each… and your group takes home $2000. Not bad, eh?

As you can see the profit potential is very high, it just depends on your participation level. And as I mentioned before, these cards provide a good value for your supporters and they are easy to sell.

Check out this Profit Potential Chart to see the possibilities…

Now with Fast Track Fundraising there is also no minimum order. Unlike other companies that have a minimum of at least 500 cards, they do not have a minimum order. This enables smaller groups to participate in this fundraiser, who couldn’t otherwise.

This is a fundraiser that many different groups can do from small to large school wide campaigns and everything in between.
